Quilt Documentation Days June 1 and 2! Schedule Your Appointment Today!

The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Gallery at Saint Vincent College will host the Western Pennsylvania Quilt Documentation Project’s quilt documentation days Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2.

The project features quilt historians on a mission to record the sewing heritage of southwestern Pennsylvania, one quilt at a time.
There is no fee charged for documentation but $5.00 is being requested to cover the cost of the copies of the data intake form.

Any type of hand-made quilt is welcome including patchwork, appliqué, embroidery, crazy quilts, whole cloth quilts and quilt tops that have not yet been quilted.

The goal is to document as many of southwestern Pennsylvania’s quilts as possible. A professional quit historian will measure, photograph, date the fabric, identify the pieced or appliquéd pattern and record the story of each quilt. Participants are asked to bring with them birth and marriage dates and any history of the individual who made the quilt. The history and photo of each quilt will be submitted to the Quilt Index and be able to be referenced through the internet at www.quiltindex.org. Quilts will not be appraised during the documentation project. While there is no charge for documentation, we ask for a $5.00 donation to cover supplies.

Ten counties of southwestern Pennsylvania will be included including Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.

For more information on the project itself, contact BCHRLF at 724 775-1848 or bchrlf@bchrlf.org Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Documentation appointments can be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1 and 2 by contacting the McCarl Gallery at 724 805-2188 or lauren.lamendola@stvincent.edu. Both public institutions and private individuals may attend.

The McCarl Coverlet Collection is made up of a colorful assortment of textiles woven by weavers of many different traditions and backgrounds. Weavers from England, Ireland, and Scotland created coverlets woven in a double weave style. This technique featured two sets of warps woven together to create two pieces of cloth joined together. They were generally woven with blue and white threads. This technique was not unanimously used by weavers from these regions, as you will see throughout the book, but it does dominate weavings from these regions.
